The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is a holistic approach to movement.  GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® exercise increases strength and flexibility, renews energy and vitality, and fosters a general sense of calm and wellbeing.   GYROTONIC® exercise sequences are composed of arches, spirals and circular movements which flow together seamlessly in rhythmic repetitions accompanied by a corresponding breathe.  GYROTONIC® methodology can be adapted to fit any ones ability and is practiced by people of all walks of life, including athletes, dancers, baby boomers, senior citizens and people recovering from illness or injury.  

The GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods are complementary exercise methods that fall under one umbrella- the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®.  Both methods were developed by Juliu Horvath, an ethnic Hungarian, professional dancer from Romania.  Horvath suffered a series of debilitating injuries during his dance career, and began developing what are now known as the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Methods as a way to heal himself and regain his strength and agility.  GYROTONIC® exercises are performed on custom-designed GYROTONIC® equipment, whereas GYROKINESIS® exercises are performed on a mat and chair. Both GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® exercise sequences are composed of spiraling, circular movements, which flow together seamlessly in rhythmic repetitions, with corresponding breath. Each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression. These carefully crafted sequences create balance, efficiency, strength and flexibility. Since the thirty plus years, Horvath began developing the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods, the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® has grown to include a global community of over 7,800 GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Trainers teaching in 52 countries.

What is the difference between GYROTONIC® and Pilates training methods?
Generally Pilates tends to be Linear and Contracted.  The GYROTONIC® method on the other hand is entirely circular and always expansive, it is never a contraction.  Even when there is a curl there is extension.  It’s main principle is space between the joints, space between the vertebrae, strength in extension.  This is unique because most systems bring you strength in compression. 
GYROTONIC® movement is fluid and moves the whole body at all times.  Muscle groups are not segmented with GYROTONIC® training.  One does not perform an arm exercise and a leg exercise later.   GYROTONIC® training is closer to yoga and dance because you are using the entire body with complimented breathing techniques!
