Amanda Millin
After tearing the labrum in her right shoulder for a second time, Amanda was told she was not a candidate for surgery. The surgeon advised that she do Pilates for a year and come see him again. Best case scenario, even after the surgery, he felt she would only have 70% percent range of motion, and her days of competitive swimming were over. Skeptical, she turned to Jill Cassidy, an east-coast, classic Pilates instructor who trained directly under Romana—a protégé of Joe Pilates. A year later, her shoulder and its surrounding muscles were strong enough to operate. And with a diligent Pilates routine post-surgery, she now has full range of motion, and can swim and surf daily.
Seeing the changes in her own body, Amanda is an adamant believer in the classic Pilates style and its biomechanical approach to rehabilitation and injury prevention. As an instructor, she hopes to change the way people approach fitness. Doing so means identifying each client’s dominant muscle groups and creating individualized workouts that target secondary muscles, so each body is balanced and operating holistically as one unit. Ideally, everyone reaches a place where their body feels and functions at its personal best, regardless of age, activity level, and lifestyle.
